Why live with pain if you don’t have to? If you’re experiencing debilitating, chronic pain, the Center for Complex Abdominal and Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CAPPS) at Celebration Health may be able to help you reduce it or even eliminate it.
Pain Caused By Bowel Obstructions
In the vast majority of cases, adhesions are painless and you’ll never experience any complications. However, if you’re experiencing small bowel obstructions there’s a 60 to 70% chance that adhesions are the problem.
Adhesions will begin to form a couple days after surgery and are basically scar tissue. If the adhesion starts to interfere with the motion of the small intestines, passing food can become more difficult. Eventually, the bowel itself may become blocked, resulting in distention, constipation and severe abdominal pain.
Because the bowel is composed of dozens of loops and folds designed to absorb nutrients, adhesions can form anywhere along the 20 to 25 feet of the bowel. If there is a closing of the bowel region or a blockage, you may feel pain or nausea. Because your food then becomes backed up through the entire digestive system, you can’t eliminate waste or eat more food. If left untreated, it can be life threatening.
